Why work with our NGO?
"We for Girls" is an organization formed with the main Objective of campaigning against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Kenya. We are therefore not against any ethnic group, religious group, or all kinds of people and culture but we are against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and any form of cruelty, torture and violation of girls and women's rights.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is not an issue that we can write off as a dying anachronism, but one that must be publicly addressed in all public forums in Kenya.
The most important step is public awareness. People must be informed that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is unnecessary, illegal and dangerous to the health and wellbeing of the girls subjected to this cruel ritual. As the message is spread hopefully people will begin to understand that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is wrong and eventually like drinking and driving, public attitudes will turn against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Having grown up in a modern Family in Kenya I had thought that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) was an archaic practice that only occurred in very remote regions of Kenya, where people are struggling with poverty and superstition. I would not believe that people close to me and my family would need to struggle against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the 21st century, and that in reality it occurs regularly in all corners of Africa daily, from the smallest village to large cosmopolitan cities.
Indeed, people close to me had to struggle against extreme pressure from relatives not to practice Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) on their daughters. Even in the 21st century the opinion of women in these matters is unimportant, and often the fate of young girls relies solely on the beliefs and opinions of
their fathers. The fact that people I know-educated, urbanized, people-had to struggle against extreme prejudice and superstition to prevent Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) from being practiced on their daughters clearly indicates the magnitude of the ongoing problem of FGM in Kenya.
This has inspired me and my friends to be the voice of girls who are living in fear and in danger of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), they suffer in silence and are unable to defend themselves. "We for Girls" wants to help by giving them a voice and doing anything possible to stop Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Kenya.
I really hope someone is inspired and supports "We for Girls" in the campaign to STOP FGM in Kenya and eventually wipe it out.
